Sulphur Springs is in sad shape.
I spent a lot of my childhood in this area. It used to be Tampa's pride and joy way back in the day. The springs were thought to be almost magical and people flocked to this area. Fast forward to today. It's sadly the worst crime area in the city. I have friends who live there and won't even set foot outside after dusk. We are supposedly in the top 10 cities to live in so how is it that we have an area so neglected? I have been accused in the past of trying to gentrify it or over develop it. That is not my intention at all. How about just making it livable and safe? Maybe reviving the springs into an attraction and bringing some much needed revenue into the area?
A mayor several years back, who shall remain nameless for now, built some cheap duplexes in Sulphur Springs and when they started to fall apart, so did the neighborhood. We have units is very bad shape that out of state landlords rent super cheap and don't take care of because they know the renters won't say anything because of the price. I was told by a cop once, who shal also remain nameless, that they don't go in and find the criminals because at least they know where they are so they let them stay there. Are you kidding me? Just leave criminals in a neighborhood with children and families. That will change day one if I am elected.
I actually really tried to get something going in this area before the COVID disaster. My website was puttheblingbackinsulphursprings.com but it was dismantled by Go Daddy. I will probably build it again. It was so cool as it showed the history and old hotel and amusement park.
